Hello Everyone,
This week we are looking at the Parable of the “Unforgiving Servant” as we discuss “Unlimited Forgiveness”. Today let’s look at the PARABLE ITSELF...First of all a king shows mercy to his servant by canceling his huge debt read with me:-
Mt 18:23-27
23"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26"The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' 27The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
How large amount was 10,000 talents? Most say, about 6,000 denarii’s were involved in just one talent.Remembering that denarii’s were a day’s normal wage, the fellow owed something like 60,000,000 denarii’s."Using the rate of $50 as one day’s wage, the amount would be $3,000,000,000 (3 billion dollars!)The mercy of the king goes beyond the actual request. The request was for patience to pay the debt. But the king was willing to forgive the debt completely!
After the servant was forgiven he in turn then refuses to cancel a fellow servant’s small debt read with me Mt 18:28-30:
28"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.
29"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'
30"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.
Now we need to ask the question how much was a hundred denarii?Remember, a "denarii" was equivalent to a day’s wage so if we use the same rate ($50 a day); the amount would be $5000.The unmerciful servant refuses to hear the same plea made earlier by himself. What was the final result: As for the cruel servant the king imposes the former sentence, even adding to it! -
Mt 18:31-34:
31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32"Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
Before, he, his family, and his possessions were only going to be soldbut now, he is too be handed over to the "torturers".
Aren’t you glad we don’t have those today?
Because of his unwillingness to forgive the unmerciful servants end, was worse than it was originally.
Tomorrow we will be looking at “The Lesson of the Parable”.
