His Name 1

Hello Everyone,
How important it is to hold God’s name in reverence, to treat it as holy.

"I will show the holiness of my great name…when I show myself holy"
(Ezekiel 36:23*) is a key verse that shows what this means.

Here God’s name is identified with His Person and identifies His faithful character and nature as Redeemer, Restorer, and Giver of the Holy Spirit.

All the names of God in the Bible reveal something about the kind of God He is.

As God (Hebrew, El, Eloah, Elohim):
 He shows creative power and providential care over the universe and humankind.

 As Yahweh (His personal name, the One who shows who He is by what He does), He is the Covenant Keeper who has promised to be with His people (Exodus 3:12).

12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

Compound names of God give further insight into His nature and relationships. These include El Shaddai, "God Almighty" (Genesis 17:1, from a root shadu meaning "mountain");

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.

El Elyon, "God Most High" (Genesis 14:18);
 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,

El Roi, "the God who sees me" (Genesis 16:13);
She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

El Olam, "the Eternal God" (Genesis 21:33);
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.

El Elohe Yisrael, "God, the God of Israel" (Genesis 33:20, emphasizing God’s special relation with Israel);
There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel

Yahweh-ropheka, "the Lord your (personal) Physician" (Exodus 15:26);
He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.”

Yahweh-nissi, "the Lord my Banner" (Exodus 17:15);
Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner.

Yahweh-shalom, "the Lord is Peace" (Judges 6:24);
So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace.

Yahweh-Roi, "the Lord my Shepherd" (Psalm 23:1);
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.

Yahweh-tsidkenu, "the Lord our Righteousness" Jeremiah 23:6, (with the implication that He forgives).
In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.

The new name of Jerusalem will be Yahweh-shammah, "the Lord is there" (Ezekiel 48:35).
“The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits.
   “And the name of the city from that time on will be:
   THE LORD IS THERE.”

Heaven knows Him as Yahweh-sabaoth, "the Lord of Hosts" (Psalm 148:2, including angelic hosts).
Praise him, all his angels,  praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

Praise His Name Greater Things Are Still To Come!
